TMJ
Some common symptoms of TMJ are:
- pain in and around the ear
- tenderness of the jaw
- clicking or popping noises when opening and shutting the mouth
- and headaches
A dentist can help identify the source of the pain with a thorough exam and appropriate x-rays. Often, the pain is caused by other problems and for some, the pain is not easily diagnosed. The pain could be related to the facial muscles, ligaments, or the jaw joints (temporomandibular joint), located in the front of the ear.
Treatments for this pain may include
- fine adjustments to occlusion
- stress reducing exercises
- muscle relaxants
- and/or wearing a mouth protector to prevent teeth grinding
Dr. Sims DDS has had extensive training in treating TMJ and other problems related to occlusion. He is graduate of the prestigious Pankey Institute, considered to offer the most thorough and high tech training in the area of occlusion and TMJ treatment.
