Implants consist of an anchor (usually titanium) that is placed in the jaw by an oral surgeon or a periodontist, and an artificial tooth which replaces the missing tooth. After the anchor is placed in the bone, the site is allowed time to heal. Following the healing process, we prepare the artificial tooth and attach it to the anchor using very sophisticated precision attachments. The result is amazingly similar to a healthy natural tooth. Not everyone is a candidate for dental implants. The health of the bones and gums must be considered before the surgery. Those who are good candidates are almost always pleased with the function and beauty of the new tooth (or teeth).

Periodontal Disease & Treatment Huntington Long Island NY
Periodontal disease attacks the tissues that support the teeth. The shallow v-shaped crevice between the teeth and gums is called the sulcus. When the sulcus is infected, it becomes a pocket between the teeth which causes the supporting tissues to break down. Teeth with deep pockets can become unstable. Without treatment, these teeth may have to be removed. The first stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis and the next stage is periodontitis. Both conditions should be treated with a regimen of regular periodontal charting and scaling and in some cases, root planing.
Scaling is used to remove plaque and tartar that is below the gum line. The tooth's root surfaces are smoothed or planed so that the gum tissue can reattach to the tooth. Generally, a section or two of the mouth are completed at each visit. If the gum disease has progressed to a more advanced state, you may be referred to a periodontist for more extensive surgery.
Research has shown that people with untreated gum disease have a greater chance of heart disease and heart attacks. Bacteria in plaque are also linked to increased incidence in heart infections and lung infections, especially in people with chronic lung diseases or a weakened immune system. Some research shows that severe periodontal disease causes a higher risk of premature, low-weight births.
